The series was a follow-up of the original House of Mystery Series, with Elvira introducing horror stories.

Elvia is a horror hostess character portrayed by Cassandra Peterson (born September 17, 1951), who is an American actress.

Peterson gained fame on Los Angeles television station KHJ-TV wearing a revealing, black, gothic, cleavage-enhancing gown as host of Elvira's Movie Macabre, a weekly B movie presentation.

In a 2011 interview, Peterson stated that as a child, she was more fascinated by horror-themed toys while other girls were occupied with Barbie dolls.
