Just outside Praia, we make an optional detour to Cidade Velha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the oldest European settlement in sub-Saharan Africa. Here, you’ll find historic streets, the old fortress, and dramatic coastal scenery — a perfect way to start the trip.

Back on the road, the journey continues through the island’s interior, passing towns like São Domingos and Assomada, where local markets, street food, and everyday island life bring Santiago’s culture to life. As the road climbs into the highlands, the scenery shifts to greener landscapes and wide views across the island.

Along the coast and rocky shoreline, natural pools formed by volcanic rock make for an ideal stop — especially on calm days. These pools are great for a refreshing swim and offer a more rugged, natural alternative to the beaches.
