How to Introduce Puppy to Older Dog: SAFE and STRESS FREE!

Описание к видео How to Introduce Puppy to Older Dog: SAFE and STRESS FREE!

Check out this method to safely introduce your puppy to an older dog! There are a ton of ways to do this, and in this video, we will walk you through one of the ways we use! The reason we sometimes do introductions with the puppy starting in the crate is that it allows them to see the adult dog while feeling much safer than if both dogs are loose together. This gives the puppy a chance to get in some smells in a very calm manner.

Introducing a puppy to your older dog is much easier if your other dog is well trained and socialized. We talk about that in this video, and it's something you should consider before getting a new puppy. If you have any reservations on how your dog would do here, this needs to be done with both dogs on leash.

In this video, the older dog we are using is super friendly, so no leash or heeling was needed. As we mentioned before, that is not always the case. Utilizing a crate is a great and safe way for two dogs to meet each other through sniffing. If either dog gets too worked up, utilizing heel is the way to go. We are looking for nice body language and giving each dog a chance to sniff to sniff each other through the crate.

Keep in mind, there is no rush to this process. Here it only took a few minutes, but if it takes you a few days to introduce the dogs that is ok! Once we feel the dogs are ready, we will leash the puppy up and take them out of the crate. It is important to supervise both dogs and their interactions one hundred percent of the time. We need to know what exactly is going on.

We often get asked if an adult dog can correct a puppy and the answer is yes within reason. A young puppy needs to know what good play is and not to be too rambunctious. However, if the puppy gets too excited, it is your responsibility to stop the puppy or heel them on leash until they are calm.

Once this goes well, we can slowly add in more and more play time and drop the leash once you feel comfortable. You can also have this meet and greet but on the walk via heel or behind a chain link fence. Where you start is completely based on how each dog does and how much you trust your other dogs inside your house.
