Lemon Juice
Some people advocate brushing or rinsing with lemon juice to whiten teeth.
lemon juice is actually citric acid and can harm teeth, causing them to lose calcium
Once calcium is lost, it’s irreplaceable.
Lemons have a pH of 2.3, which is very low. The lower the pH, the more acidic it is. If you put lemon juice directly on your teeth, it starts causing damage immediately.
And combining lemon juice with baking soda—sometimes also recommended—is another bad idea.
Not only will the acid of the lemon juice eech calcium from teeth, the baking soda will erode tooth enamel with the potential to cause permanent damage
Strawberries
Strawberries contain the tooth-whitening enzyme of malic acid, which can do wonders for your smile without the harmful chemicals and high cost of formal dental work. To get a pair of pearly whites, puree or crush one strawberry, add ½ teaspoon of baking soda, and mix well. Dip your toothbrush into the mixture, and coat your teeth with it. Let the mixture sit on your teeth for about five minutes before brushing your teeth with your regular toothpaste.
this remedy has not been completely backed up by science.
If you decide to give this method a try, use one times per week.
Despite studies showing that a strawberry and baking soda paste had a minimal effect on tooth enamel, excessive use could cause damage
Apple cider vinegar
This vinegar is twice fermented apple juice and within the first stage of fermentation the apple’s sugars into alcohol (turning it into cider). During the second stage, bacteria converts alcohol into acetic acid.
At the end of the fermentation process, the vinegar has an average pH reading between 2.5 and 3.0. Water measures in as a neutral solution, with a pH of 7.0, therefore the acidity of apple cider vinegar is relatively significant. Unfortunately, when undiluted, the vinegar can weaken tooth enamel and consequently leading to sensitivity, decay and cavities.
Baking Soda
Baking soda isn’t an alternative to toothpaste — Baking soda doesn’t contain fluoride, so it can’t kill bacteria or help prevent cavities. You should still use a regular toothpaste of some sort to clean your teeth thoroughly.
Use proper brushing techniques — Baking soda has an abrasive nature. While it’s great at removing built-up plaque and surface stains, it can also damage your enamel if you brush with it too aggressively.
Don’t overuse the product — Don’t use baking soda for whitening purposes more than twice a week. If it’s overused, it can cause tooth sensitivity and increase the risk for cavities.
Use hydrogen peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is a natural bleaching agent that also kills bacteria in your mouth
One study found that a toothpaste containing baking soda and 1% hydrogen peroxide led to significantly whiter teeth
strong concentrations or overuse can cause gum irritation and tooth sensitivity.
One way to use hydrogen peroxide is as a mouthwash before you brush your teeth. Make sure you are using a 1.5% or 3% solution to avoid side effects.
When used carefully, it can be an effective way to whiten your teeth. But if used incorrectly — in concentrations that are too high or if used too often — it can cause serious and sometimes expensive tooth damage.
Practice oil pulling
Oil pulling is a traditional Indian folk remedy meant to improve oral hygiene and remove toxins from the body.
The practice involves swishing oil around in your mouth to remove bacteria, which can turn into plaque and cause your teeth to look yellow
Traditionally, Indians used sunflower or sesame oil for oil pulling, but any oil will work.
Coconut oil is a popular choice because it has a pleasant taste and offers many health benefits.
Coconut oil is also high in lauric acid, which is known for its ability to reduce inflammation and kill bacteria
A few studies have shown that daily oil pulling reduces bacteria in the mouth, along with plaque and gingivitis .
Unfortunately, no scientific studies have proven that oil pulling whitens your teeth. However, it’s a safe practice and worth a try. Many people claim their teeth are whiter and brighter after regular oil pulling.
To oil pull, put 1 tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth and push and pull the oil through your teeth. Coconut oil is solid at room temperature, so you may need to wait a few seconds for it to melt. Continue the oil pulling for 15–20 minutes.
