In Islam, it is not permitted for a groom or his family to demand or expect a dowry from the bride or her family. This practice, common in some cultures, where the bride’s family is expected to provide money, gifts, or valuables to the groom or his family, has no basis in Islamic teachings and is considered un-Islamic.

Islam explicitly designates mahr (a mandatory gift from the groom to the bride) as the only marital financial obligation, emphasizing the groom’s responsibility to provide for his wife. Any form of dowry taken from the bride’s family can go against Islamic principles because:
1. No Basis in Islam: Demanding dowry from the bride’s family contradicts the spirit of Islamic marriage, where financial responsibility lies with the groom. The Quran and Hadith emphasize the groom’s duty to pay mahr to the bride, with no mention of the bride’s family giving any form of dowry.
2. Burden on the Bride’s Family: Islam encourages fairness and kindness in marital relations, and requiring the bride’s family to provide dowry often leads to financial strain or social pressure, which goes against Islam’s principles of justice and compassion.
3. Potential Harm: The dowry system can lead to harmful practices, such as delaying marriage for financial reasons or causing conflicts and mistreatment within families. Islam discourages anything that leads to harm, discord, or unfair treatment in relationships.

In summary, the practice of asking for or expecting dowry from the bride’s family is not allowed in Islam. Islam encourages marriages based on mutual respect, love, and simplicity rather than material demands, ensuring that marriage is accessible and not a financial burden on either party.
