This is stage F-A - The Bydo... - with the legendary R9A Arrowhead on R-Typer difficulty. Played on Score Attack.
About this ship:
If you've played R-Type then you know this ship. It's the classic. The first. The iconic R9 Arrowhead. It uses the Standard Force with its three traditional, distinctive weapons - the red air to air laser that looks like rings, the blue rebound laser that fires straight ahead and at 45 degree angles, and the yellow counter ground/ceiling laser. The wave cannon has a two loop charge and is straight to the point - it fires straight ahead, no messing around.
I absolutely love this ship. For the most part it is more than a match for your enemies on Bydo or R-Typer difficulty, barring one or two exceptions.
This is one of the three ships that you start the game with.
Pros:
Every Force laser serves a distinct purpose, leaving no shortcomings.
The red weapon can be grazed through enemies. As long as it doesn't stop, it will keep doing damage all the way through. You can even work the red laser to fire through things doing this.
Cons:
Getting the wrong weapon at the wrong time. The yellow laser can leave you particularly vulnerable.
Ships in this series:
Arrowhead, Delta, Ladylove, Wave Master
Stage note:
This stage shows that the Bydo are becoming more like their human parents. It is an artistic expression of human sexuality, from the couple in the background, to the watery look of the stage, the entry point that increasingly narrows to the Bydo Core, which looks like an egg. The only way to win is to wait until the Force and Bydo Core both flash and then throw your Force, which becomes stuck, and then fire a wave cannon blast to make it explode. Afterward you have to charge your wave cannon for 45 seconds, which flashes the word FINAL when it finishes, and then shoot it. The artistic symbolism is very subtle, and at the same time, right in your face.
This stage, to me, is a perfect example that video games can be art.
Did you know:
During the final battle, after you blow up your Force, the Bydo Core begins throwing Standard Forces at you. When I first played this game so long ago, I would panic because it looked like there was hardly any room to move. I tested a theory back then - that the only lethal part of the Force is the orange part and not the control rods. I was right. That's why you'll see me edging up and down to avoid the orange part of the Forces without regard to the forest of control rods, which fly harmlessly past. Once I figured that out, things became much easier.
Personal note:
The Bydo had to know that their oldest enemy would be the one to finish them for good. The Arrowhead is the only ship that I believe fits for this stage. I've said this before, but R-Type Final has the most epic showdown of any video game I've ever played, and I've been gaming since 1985. Nothing else comes anywhere near close to this. The last charge, the desperation as you dodge through the Force storm, and the final blast which destroys the Bydo and your ship, is unmatched. Can you feel the tension during that final battle of wills? Irem really hit it out of the park here.
