Leader and soloist with the English Concert from its foundation until 1990, Standage also fulfilled the same role for many years with the City of London Sinfonia. In addition to the many records he made with the English Concert (including Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, nominated for a Grammy award), he also recorded solo and chamber music, including all of Mozart’s violin concertos with the Academy of Ancient Music, of which he was, with Christopher Hogwood, Associate Director from 1991 to 1995.
Since his foundation, with Richard Hickox, of Collegium Musicum 90, he has made numerous recordings for Chandos Records. As soloist and director of chamber orchestras and chamber musician, he is active both in Britain and abroad. He is leader of the Salomon String Quartet (founded by him in 1981), which specialises in historical performance of the Classical repertoire, performing worldwide and making many recordings and broadcasts.
Monica Huggett was born in London in 1953. She took up the violin at age six and at age sixteen entered the Royal Academy of Music as a student of Manoug Parikian.
From age seventeen, beginning as a freelance violinist in London, Monica has earned her living solely as a violinist and artistic director and, in 2008, was appointed inaugural artistic director of The Juilliard School’s Historical Performance Program, where she is now artistic advisor and artist-in-residence. In the intervening four decades, she co-founded, with Ton Koopman, the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra; founded her own London-based ensemble, Sonnerie; worked with Christopher Hogwood at the Academy of Ancient Music and Trevor Pinnock with the English Concert; toured the United States in concert with James Galway; and co-founded, in 2004, the Montana Baroque Festival.
She is a frequent guest director and soloist around the world, including engagements with Arion Baroque Orchestra (Montréal), Tafelmusik (Toronto), Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Philharmonia Baroque (San Francisco), Columbus Symphony, Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, Seville Baroque Orchestra, and the Concerto Copenhagen. She regularly directs performances in New York of Juilliard415, the student baroque orchestra of the Historical Performance Program, as well as playing with Juilliard Baroque, the faculty ensemble of the program.
Her recording of J. S. Bach’s “Orchestra Suites for a Young Prince” with Gonzalo X. Ruiz (PBO principal oboist) and Ensemble Sonnerie was nominated for a Grammy™ Award and won the Diapason d’Or in 2009.
The English violinist, Catherine Mackintosh, studied violin with Aurea Pernel and Silvia Rosenberg at the Royal College of Music, London. Following her studies, she was immediately in demand from such pioneering groups as Musica Reservata. In 1969, she helped found the Consort of Musicke (with whom she sometimes played up to seven instruments in one concert!) and also joined the English Consort of Viols. In 1973, she became the first concertmistress of The Academy of Ancient Music, a position she held until 1987. During her fifteen-year tenure with this orchestra, she made important recordings under the direction of Christopher Hogwood, including George Frideric Handel's Messiah, the complete W.A. Mozart symphonies, and Antonio Vivaldi's L'estro armonico and the Four Seasons (sharing the solo parts in these concertos with Alison Bury, John Holloway, and Monica Huggett). In 1984, Mackintosh founded the Purcell Quartet, and has concentrated more on solo and chamber music. With the Purcell Quartet she recorded trio sonatas by Lawes, Purcell, Biber, Arcangelo Corelli, G.F. Handel, and Leclair. That same year, she became co-concertmistress with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, with which she made the first recording on period instruments of A. Vivaldi's concertos for viola d'amore.
