Impressions/observations during the test drive:
The exterior design of this vehicle is focused more on simplicity and elegance, rather than excitement and sportiness which is a good thing on its own - not everything must be sporty. The interior's combination of hard plastics and soft-touch materials is good enough especially for this price point - there are some good materials in this interior. It is also noticeable in the interior that the design focuses more on comfort and practicality rather than sportiness like the MG HS T. Sitting in the driver's seat, one will notice the analog speedometer and tachometer which is a refreshing sight in today's time where most new vehicles especially in the crossover SUV segment, have a digital driver's display. This is definitely a different approach to this segment compared to the MG HS T. The choice of one over the other would really just depend on one's personal preference: for sporty looks, choose the HS T; for simple but not boring looks, choose the GS4. These two vehicles have almost the same ride quality - going through some road imperfections is not that harsh in both of these vehicles.
The engine's output is almost the same with the HS T, but it is noticeable that the GS4 is less sporty (like its design language) than that. However, that is not to say that this is underpowered - in fact, the power is adequate to carry the vehicle's weight around and even up some inclines. The driving experience of this car is definitely more on the casual side, rather than the sporty side. This fact is more evident with the lack of paddle shifters - the way to shift in manual mode is the buttons of + and - in the gear shifter itself. Speaking of the transmission, this car's automatic is considerably smoother than the HS T's dual clutch in low and cruising speeds which makes for a smoother experience. It is to be mentioned that there are different steering modes that can be changed through the infotainment system of the car (Comfort, Normal, Sport). The steering of this vehicle is manageable, even in sport mode which makes it easy to maneuver around. In comfort and normal mode, the steering is a little too light which is why sport mode may be preferable if one wants more feedback from the steering wheel.
