UNEXPECTED TUK TUK SCAM, BANGKOK THAILAND

Unexpected tuk tuk scam, Bangkok, Thailand. The Thailand tuk tuk drivers have a terrible reputation for scamming tourists. They offer you a cheap fare to your destination, like in my case just 200 THB, approx £5. Once your in the Tuk tuk they will offer you the free shopping trip with some Bangkok attractions thrown in, so its sounds like a great deal.Beware as this is one of the oldest scams in Bangkok, Thailand.

If you accept they will take you to their sponsor shops where they get a percentage of the sale if you purchase something. Such shops as tailors, gold, souvenir, etc. If you decline to purchase anything thing then does work in the tuk tuk divers favour. He will ensure that the last shop you visit is remote and getting back on your own to your hotel will be difficult, almost impossible. He will demand several thousand Thai baht maybe 3 to 5000 THB to get you back, If you decline, he drives away leaving you stranded. Most tourists will now realise this has all been a scam and pay the money.

This was my experience of the Tuk Tuk scam in Bangkok. I knew the score and politely declined and arrived at my destination safely.
