While “excommunication” might feel like a relic of the Catholic Inquisition, in actuality, most major traditions—Christian and non-Christian alike—have always had some means of removing the heretical or extremely unrighteous from full-fellowship, whether that process was called “excommunication,” “disfellowshipping,” “membership withdrawal,” or something else.
