Did you know this in Hazbin Hotel?

During season 2 episode 5 we learned that lucifer can’t harm sinners. Why is this? Let me explain.

So in the episode lucifer explains to vaggie that he can’t harm sinners, he’s in hell as a punishment. A little later lucifer goes to vox’s concert to confront him however vox knows that lucifer can’t harm him, so he takes the moment to humiliate him infront of all the sinners.

This explains a lot about lucifer’s character. Firstly the reason he was able to harm adam during season 1 was because he violated the deal and harmed a hellborn. Part of lucifer’s punishment in hell is that he can’t do anything with sinners, so instead he created the hellborn. This is why he cherishes them so much and signed the deal with heaven so that they wouldn’t be harmed.

Secondly it illustrates why he’s the way he is. He only cares about his hobbies, his family and the hellborn. Even from his personality and the way he acts, he’s extremely similar to emily and the other angels. He has a whimsical happy attitude that none of the other sinners have.

I do think that from a meta standpoint, this limitation was also put on lucifer so that he wouldn’t overpower the story. If he was able to do whatever he wants the story would be way less interesting, there would be no stakes.

Over on bluesky the show’s creator vivziepop talked about this. She said that lucifer was a dreamer who fell in love and defied an unjust system. He isn't a tyrannical evil ruler, he's a cosmic being trapped in what is considered his greatest mistake. The limitations placed on him have wide reaching implications and will be relevant later.

Also- while Lucifer is by all accounts the devil from the bible, he isn’t really the devil. He isn’t a bad guy.
