I have worked out of the Rochut transcription of the Bordogni etudes for many years. Over time, they have become part of the trombone players "gospel" and often take on a characteristically "trombone" manner. Strict rhythm, convenient breaths, straight tone and an emphasis on the legato technique. When performed with piano, I believe the character and expression of the etude changes. I take many liberties with tempo and dynamics yet still remain true to the vocalise quality of Bordogni. There will continue to be considerable debate about the minutia of different editions, however, I sincerely hope that during the adjudication process, specific errata does not trump musical intentionality.
