Have you ever heard of a brave warrior from Uttarakhand, remembered as the “Rani Laxmibai of Garhwal”?
This is not a legend, but a true story of a girl who, at just 15 years old, stepped onto the battlefield and defeated her enemies. Her name was Tilu Rauteli.
Tilu was born on 8 August 1661, in Guraad village, Chaundkot, Pauri Garhwal. Her real name was Tilottama Devi, the only daughter of Bhup Singh Rawat and Mainavati Devi. She had two brothers, Bhaktu and Pathwa, both brave warriors like their father. Her father, Bhup Singh, was the commander of King Man Shah’s army.
By the age of 12, Tilu had already mastered horse riding and sword fighting under her teacher, Shivdutt Pokhariyal. When she turned 15, her engagement was fixed with Bhawan Singh Negi of Ida village. But before the marriage could take place, war broke out between the Garhwalis and the Katyuri forces.
In the fierce battle of Khairagarh, her father Bhup Singh, her two brothers, and even her fiancé were all killed while fighting for their land. Tilu, unaware of their deaths, was preparing to go to a local fair. Her grieving mother told her the truth and challenged her, saying:
"Your father, your brothers, your fiancé… all have been martyred. Who will take their revenge now? Can you do it?"
That day, the spark of revenge lit a fire in young Tilu’s heart. She took a vow — she would never marry, but instead take up the sword to avenge her family and protect her land.
With her three friends, her uncle Ramu Bhandari, her guru Shivdutt Pokhariyal, and her father’s soldiers, Tilu rode into battle on her beloved horse Binduli. From Kalinka Ghat to Suraikhet, she crushed the enemy forces. In battle, she was unstoppable — striking down enemies like a storm of fire. Over the next 7 years, this teenage warrior fought fearlessly, winning back 13 forts from the Katyuri rulers. The people of Garhwal began calling her their very own Rani Laxmibai.
But destiny had something else planned. On 15 May 1683, while returning from battle, Tilu stopped near the Nayar River to drink water. She was unarmed. A Katyuri soldier hiding in the bushes attacked her from behind. Even in her final moments, Tilu snatched his sword and struck back, killing him — before breathing her last at the young age of 22.
Tilu Rauteli did not die — she became immortal through her courage. Her name lives on as a symbol of bravery and sacrifice in Uttarakhand.
Since 2006, the “Veerbala Tilu Rauteli Award” is given by the Uttarakhand government to girls and women who achieve extraordinary feats in their fields. Every year, fairs are still held in her memory in Kanda and Bironkhal, where people honor her with music, drums, and rituals.
