At the time of its release, Ridley Scott's 2013 film The Counselor was a disappointment both critically and commercially, despite its stunning cast (Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz), it's celebrated director, and the pedigree of being the first original screenplay penned by novelist Cormac McCarthy. How did it all go wrong?

Well, more to the point, did it go wrong? It's been seven years and there's been an extended cut available for quite some time. Is it time for a critical reappraisal of one of Scott's most lampooned releases? And what does this have to do with Ridley's late brother Tony Scott and the stylistic divergence between their respective filmographies?
