Описание к видео Mendez v. Westminister School Dist. (1946) Overview | LSData Case Brief Video Summary

In Orange County, California, around 5000 individuals of Mexican or Latin descent filed a class action lawsuit against several school districts and their trustees and superintendents, alleging that they have implemented a policy of discrimination against elementary school-aged children of Mexican or Latin descent. The plaintiffs claim that the districts excluded these children from attending certain schools within their respective districts and instead required them to attend schools exclusively reserved for such children. The defendants challenge the jurisdiction of the court, but the court has already denied their motion to dismiss the case. The court found that the segregation policies and practices of the defendant school districts in Orange County are specific to children of Mexican ancestry and parentage, which is contrary to the general requirements of the school laws of the State. The court also found that the practices are inconsistent with California's public educational system and disregard rights secured by the supreme law of the land.
