The Twitter ban in Brazil has been lifted!

But how did we get here? Let’s dig in.

A couple of things have happened since the ban.

According to the BBC, in the middle of September, Brazilian users were briefly allowed to access X.

X claims the restoration was unintended and happened when they switched services between internet providers.

This circumvention of the ban, whether purposeful or not, caused Brazil to fine X 920,000 USD.

Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes then fined Starlink, Elon Musk’s internet satellite firm, 920,000 USD for each day X continued to operate in Brazil.

During the lead-up to the ban and afterward, Musk publicly spoke of Justice Moraes negatively, making several posts on X calling him, among other things, “an evil dictator cosplaying as a judge.”

Despite this, on October 4th, X’s lawyers submitted the total fines equating to 5.1 million USD.

However, they initially sent it to the wrong bank, and as such the ban was not lifted until October 8th when the funds were successfully transferred over to the right location.

But after all the bad blood, why would Elon want to return X to Brazil?
In an NPR article, Matteo Ceurvels, research firm Emarketer’s analyst for Latin America and Spain explains “The move was pragmatic, likely driven by the economic consequences of losing access to millions of users in its third-largest market worldwide, along with the millions of dollars in associated advertising revenue.”
