Chancelade Abbey
In 1120 hermits gathered around a spring organized themselves into a community, adopted the rule of life of Saint Augustine and founded the abbey of Chancelade.

The name Chancelade comes from the Latin fons cancellatus, meaning a hidden fountain, a protected spring.

This abbey developed rapidly but after the 100 years war and the wars of religion, only ruins remained.

In 1614 the young Alain de Solminihac accepted to succeed his uncle as abbot of Chancelade. After his ordination he settled in Chancelade and successfully undertook the reform of his abbey.

The abbey will then know a very great influence before being, for the most part, destroyed at the time of the revolution leading to the disappearance of all monastic presence... until 1992.

Abbaye de Chancelade
En 1120, des ermites rassemblés autour d'une source s'organisent en communauté, adoptent la règle de vie de saint Augustin et fondent l'abbaye de Chancelade.
Le nom Chancelade vient du latin fons cancellatus, signifiant une fontaine cachée, une source protégée.
Cette abbaye s'est développée rapidement mais après la guerre de 100 ans et les guerres de religion, il ne restait que des ruines.
En 1614 le jeune Alain de Solminihac accepta de succéder à son oncle comme abbé de Chancelade. Après son ordination, il s'installa à Chancelade et entreprit avec succès la réforme de son abbaye.
L'abbaye connaîtra alors une très grande influence avant d'être, pour la plupart, détruite au moment de la révolution entraînant la disparition de toute présence monastique... jusqu'en 1992.
