UN weapons inspectors came under sniper fire as they entered one of the sites of an alleged chemical weapons strike in the Syrian capital.

State TV announced that the team had been shot at by "terrorists," a government term for those involved in the war to topple the Assad regime.

It is yet to be independently established where the gunfire originated.

Reports suggest the inspectors came under fire in a western suburb of Damascus as they spoke to medical staff at a makeshift hospital.

Despite being targeted, UN staff have been able to document the experiences of those injured in the alleged toxic assault.
