Dr G Raman was a court and parliamentary interpreter in the 1960s. While working full-time, he did the London LL.B external degree. After obtaining his LL.B in 1966, he travelled to England to do the Barrister’s course. He was called to the English Bar in Sept 1968 and admitted to the Singapore Bar in Aug 1969. Raman specialised in criminal law and was actively involved in defending numerous cases touching on human rights in the 1970s. He was legal adviser to the University of Singapore Students’ Union and polytechnic students. He was frequently on panels discussing issues of the day.

In 1974, he defended one of two workers who were jointly charged with student leader, Tan Wah Piow, for allegedly rioting inside trade union premises. He had initially represented Wah Piow as well but Wah Piow decided to defend himself for very good reasons. The other defence lawyer was the late Francis Khoo Kah Siang. The trial before District Judge, T S Sinnathuray lasted 47 days.

Dr Raman’s career was interrupted briefly when he was arrested and imprisoned under the ISA on 10 Feb 1977. After release on 25 Feb 1978, he published a book on Probate Law and is today an expert on this subject. While managing his own law firm G R Law Corporation, he obtained a doctorate degree from the School of Oriental and African Studies in 2003. He wound up his company and joined Khattar Wong LLP as senior consultant in July this year.
