Thomas Roland Curren was born on July 3, 1964, in Santa Barbara, California, into a surfing legacy. His father Pat Curren was both a big wave pioneer and master board shaper, deeply influencing Tom’s future in the sport. By 14, Tom was dominating junior competitions. By 21, he was world champion. But fame never suited him. He boycotted apartheid, vanished from the spotlight, then returned with one of the greatest comebacks in surf history—only to walk away again.
