Dean Nelson and Jennifer Schori from the Department of Conservation present an overview of Project River Recovery (PRR), established in 1990 through an agreement between the Department of Conservation and the former Electricity Corporation of New Zealand to address the ecological impacts of the Upper Waitaki Power Scheme on braided river ecosystems. The agreement now sits between DOC, Meridian Energy and Genesis Energy. Over the past 35 years, PRR has played a pivotal role in advancing ecological knowledge of these river systems and managing threats to indigenous flora and fauna. This presentation will highlight PRR’s key achievements over the past 35 years, including raising the profile of braided rivers and their species, advancements to mammalian predator control techniques, and habitat management and creation.
