How to Complete W-8BEN Form

In this tutorial, you will learn How to Complete the W-8BEN Form. It is a United States legal tax form from the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) which is also referred to as the “Certificate of Foreign Status of Beneficial Owner for United States Tax Withholding”. If you are an individual, you should complete the W-8BEN form; and if you are a business entity, you should complete the W-8BEN-E form.

Essentially, the W-8BEN form is required to be completed by foreign nationals to US tax authorities in order to declare your tax status to the IRS. The form has three main parts: (1) IDENTIFICATION OF BENEFICIAL OWNER; (2) CLAIM OF TAX TREATY BENEFITS; (3) CERTIFICATION. The purpose of completing the W-8BEN-E form is so that individuals or companies, in the US, from whom you earn income from, will not withhold tax from you.

You don’t need to send this to the IRS you only need to provide it to the individual or company (in the US) from whom you are receiving income.
