When Paul A. Grove was drafted into the United States Army he was assigned to the 492nd Escort Guard Company as a Military Policeman. Grove was in charge of watching over German POWs that were brought stateside during the war.

Eventually Grove found himself transferred to the 89th Infantry Division and shipped off to Europe to help with the Allied push into Germany. Grove would get his first taste of combat crossing the Rhine River under heavy German fire.
