How to Create and Use Nested and Subsequences in Premiere Pro

In this Sixty Second Tutorial we cover how to create nested sequences and subsequences, the differences between them and how to use them.

We cover:-

1. Firstly, nested sequences...

To create a nested sequences, select the single clip or group of clips you want to nest, right click and select “nest sequence”.

2. Premiere will prompt you to rename this nested sequence, then click ok.
This nested sequence now groups together all the clips into one block on the timeline, if you need to edit individual clips within it you can double click and open the nested sequence and edit as necessary.

3. A nested sequence is useful for organisation if you have a complex video with many sections, or if you want to apply an effect such as lumetri color to a group of clips without using an adjustment layer.

You can also nest and indvidual clip and apply warp stabiliser to it, this often solves instances where Premiere cannot apply warp stabiliser.

4. Secondly Subsequences...

A subsequence is used when you want to create a copy of a group of clips. To create it, select your clips, right click and select make subsequence.

5. This subsequence will not link in the same way a nested sequence does, but instead should be seen as a separate copy of the clips that you can save for reference or to avoid a section of your editing being lost/overwritten as you edit further.
