Guangzhou's Beijing Road is a street located in the Yuexiu District of Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China, that integrates culture, entertainment, and commerce. It is also the site where the city of Guangzhou was originally founded. Since the Qin Dynasty, Beijing Road and its surrounding area have been the city's center, a central position that has remained unchanged for over two thousand years, creating a rare marvel in the history of world urban development. This bustling commercial street is not only one of Guangzhou's most vibrant shopping paradises but also an open-air historical museum, carrying a profound historical and cultural heritage. The history of Beijing Road can be traced back to 214 BC when Emperor Qin Shi Huang unified the Lingnan region and established Panyu City, the prototype of Guangzhou, at this location. Subsequently, from the Tang, Southern Han, Song, to the Ming and Qing dynasties, it consistently served as the political, cultural, and commercial heart of Guangzhou. Historically, Beijing Road has undergone several name changes. During the Qing Dynasty, it was known in sections as Chengxuan Direct Street and Shuangmen Di. In the early years of the Republic of China, it was renamed Yonghan Road to commemorate the revolutionary hero Hu Hanmin. In 1966, reflecting the political atmosphere of the time, it was renamed "Beijing Road," symbolizing the Guangzhou people's devotion to the nation's capital, Beijing, a name that has been in use ever since. In 2002, during a pedestrianization renovation project, an extraordinary discovery was made: the remains of 11 layers of ancient roads dating from the Tang Dynasty onwards, as well as the foundations of the Song Dynasty's Gongbei Tower. These precious archaeological sites have been preserved in situ and are displayed under glass for visitors to see, becoming Beijing Road's most unique attraction—the "Millennium Ancient Road." Today, the Beijing Road Pedestrian Street stretches for about 1.5 kilometers, hosting a wide array of well-known brands, time-honored shops, specialty restaurants, and large department stores.
