It was lovely to hear birds singing on a visit to Brimham Rocks last week. It is a wonderful place in North Yorkshire with many large rock sculptures formed from mountains eroded over time. The National Trust information tells us that 430 - 380 million years ago a mountain range to the north of Brimham began to wear away leaving the hard granite and stripy gneiss. As the mountains eroded millstone grit was laid down in a river delta. 65 million years ago saw the extinction of the dinosaurs. Then 22 million years ago there was an uplift of the Pennines and over many following years, under a warm climate, chemical weathering weakened the vertical joints in the rock.18,000 -12,000 years ago the Ice age caused more erosion and the rocks are forever changing to this day.
This is my first visit for many years and it is an intriguing place with wonderful views without climbing on a rock! It is well looked after by The National Trust, with a shop, cafe and kiosk also there is no charge other than for the car park £6 for 4 hours, £8 per day. Easy walking and well behaved dogs are welcome under control in the nesting season (April-June).
