Richard Flores was around 30,000 feet in the air when he began showing symptoms of a stroke. His flight home to Dallas was diverted to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, where the plane was met on the ground by the Barrow Emergency Stroke Treatment Unit and the Phoenix Fire Department.

Richard underwent a CT scan on board the unit, which was reviewed remotely by Barrow vascular neurologist Daniel Gonzalez, MD. Within 1 hour and 20 minutes of symptom onset, a mobile stroke unit nurse administered the clot-busting medication tenecteplase (TNK), saving Richard's life.
