London’s recent slide in global liveability rankings has turned heads—and not in a good way. The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has just released its 2025 Global Liveability Index, and London has tumbled to 54th place out of 173 cities surveyed. Once a stable frontrunner, the capital now scores poorly on safety—thanks to rising crime and lingering terrorism threats—and struggles with overstretched infrastructure and housing shortages.

On the home front, a European Commission survey shows Londoners themselves are growing disenchanted. Only 85% now say they’re satisfied with city life—a drop of 8% in just four years, the steepest fall of any major European capital. Residents point to soaring rents, longer commutes and a sense of social isolation as key factors driving their frustration.

For those who came from abroad, the picture is bleaker still. The 2023 InterNations Expat City Ranking places London 42nd out of 49, with 74% of expats struggling with the general cost of living—more than double the global average—and 79% finding housing unaffordable. Many praise the career opportunities but lament that salaries simply don’t keep pace with expenses.

Cost pressures are underscored by Mercer’s 2024 Cost of Living Survey, which names London the eighth most expensive city for overseas workers. From grocery bills to transport fares, everyday outlays have skyrocketed, squeezing both locals and newcomers.

Taken together, these “official” assessments sketch a London at a crossroads: a city brimming with culture and opportunity, yet buckling under high costs and service strains. Whether this downturn is a blip or the start of a longer trend remains to be seen, but for now, the capital’s shine is unmistakably dulled.
