Are you a houseplant enthusiast who’s noticed your prized houseplants like Alocasia, Caladium, or even Amorphophallus suddenly looking like they’re dying back? Don’t worry—they might just be going dormant! In this video, we’ll take a deep dive into the world of aroid dormancy—why it happens, how to spot it, and most importantly, how to care for your houseplants during this vital rest phase.

What is Plant Dormancy?
Dormancy is a survival mechanism for many plants, especially aroids with tubers or rhizomes. When environmental conditions such as temperature, light levels, and moisture decrease, your aroid may enter dormancy. This state allows the plant to conserve energy and survive through harsh conditions. It's completely normal for tropical and subtropical plants to undergo these cycles, especially when you replicate their natural growing conditions indoors.

But how do you know if your plant is truly dormant or on its way out? In this video, I’ll help you identify dormancy versus death, show you signs that dormancy is ending, and offer expert care tips to ensure your plants stay healthy, even when they’re “resting.”

Aroids Known for Dormancy
Certain aroids are more likely to go dormant due to their native habitats. These include:

Alocasia – Known for dramatic dormancy periods, especially in cooler climates.
Caladium – These stunning plants are almost guaranteed to go dormant during fall and winter.
Amorphophallus – Known for its large tuber, this plant often drops all its foliage and rests before sending out new growth.
Whether you’ve got one of these species or a different variety, the same principles apply.

Why Dormancy Occurs
Dormancy in aroids is primarily triggered by environmental cues:

Light: Aroids may go dormant if they aren’t receiving enough light, especially during shorter days in the fall and winter.
Temperature: Cooler temperatures can signal to the plant that it’s time to slow down and conserve energy.
Watering: Overwatering during dormancy can lead to root rot, while underwatering can stress the plant even further. Finding a balance is key!
In this video, I’ll break down the science of dormancy, helping you understand the biological processes that cause aroids to go into rest mode. We’ll talk about how dormancy evolved as a way to cope with seasonal changes and how to mimic these conditions in your home to keep your plants thriving.

Caring for Dormant Aroids
When aroids go dormant, many collectors make the mistake of either over-caring or neglecting the plant. Here’s what to do instead:

Reduce watering: Once dormancy kicks in, it’s important to cut back on watering. You’ll notice fewer leaves, slower growth, and possibly yellowing. Resist the urge to water as frequently as you would during the growing season.
Adjust temperature: Dormant plants don’t need as much heat. Consider keeping them in a cooler spot in your home.
Storage options: Some species like Caladiums can be dug up and stored as tubers during dormancy, while others, like Alocasia, prefer to remain potted with minimal care.
Signs That Dormancy is Ending
When your plant starts showing signs of new growth, such as small shoots or budding leaves, dormancy is coming to an end. At this point, you can gradually increase water and light levels. However, don’t rush it—jumping back into full care routines too quickly can stress the plant. The transition out of dormancy is just as delicate as the entry into it!

Final Tips
Plant dormancy can be intimidating, but once you understand it, it becomes a natural part of your plant care routine. In this video, I’ll guide you through how to confidently manage dormancy periods, whether you’re growing a common Alocasia or a rare Amorphophallus. By embracing this natural cycle, you’ll enjoy healthier plants year-round.
