The True Meaning of Christmas | Spoken Word Poetry

If this was a challenging year for you. Love came down at Christmas looks at what whether the Christmas story has any meaning for us this year.

This Christmas spoken word piece asks the honest question, what does Christmas mean, when life is so challenging for so many of us.

Here's the words in full:

The nativity
A child,
Born in a stable
Soft lights glowing
The scent of hay
Such a cozy scene

(But) this year
I want to ask
That child a question.

With all that’s happened
In our world
What does the
Baby in the manger
Mean for us
This Christmas?

What does he
Have to say to those
Who will spend Christmas
Separated from those they love?
Whose kids won’t be
Driving home for Christmas
Or to those
Facing hardship?
What about those
Living with heartache
Who have no place
They can call home
Or who are simply exhausted
By life’s daily grind?
I throw my question
Into the darkness
Of a moonless night
And, as I look up
Into the sky above
A star appears and
I hear the gentlest of whispers,
‘Look again!’

So I look closer
At that stable scene
And as I do
Glimpse something new
In the face of
That child
Lying innocent
And helpless there

I see the One who
Set the earth into motion
Whose hands flung
Stars into space

I see the King
Who gave up his home in heaven
To be born in shame
In a dirty stable
A place so unlike
The glory of heaven
But so familiar to those he came for
The shepherds
The lepers
The sick and
The poor
The ordinary man
Like me
Like us

He gave up His throne
Threw off His royal robes
Cast off his strength and
Set aside His glory
Embracing the rough garments
Of earthly weakness

He became like us
Left his home to
Live as one of us
Knew hardship
Poverty
And homelessness
Pain
Loss
And grief

This child
Grew into a man
Who promised rest
For our souls
And peace
For our troubled hearts.

Yet he was rejected
By those who should have welcomed him
Abandoned
By those he loved best
And crucified
By those who could have crowned Him King

This child
For whom there was
No room at the inn
Who had no place
To rest his head
Was the one
Who came to make a way
Where there was no way
Who defied death itself
To fulfil his promise
To give us something more
Than this earth can offer
He/Who threw open the doors
To heavenTo welcome/invite us in
And/To bring/welcome us home
And as I look at
Those tiny hands
Destined for a crossFor a moment
I’m lost in awe
And wonder
That the
Everlasting One
Would step
Out of heaven
And into
Time itself
For me
For us

I don’t know
What you want
For Christmas
This year
But this Christmas-time
I hope you might remember thatLove came down
To a stable
To bring you
The greatest gift of all
The gift of HOPE
