"It's almost as if we're creating a new species - a sort of 'Man of the city' - who is an adapted creature and already, in my view, slightly dehumanised." - Kit Pedler.

Kit Pedler is best known as the co-creator of Doctor Who villains the Cybermen and the popular science fiction TV show Doomwatch. He has a great interest in the impact science and technology has on the lives of humans, and is currently very concerned about the level of pollution in London.

He takes Nationwide reporter Christopher Rainbow to Oxford Circus, to demonstrate the level of noise and air pollution in the city. If the Doomwatch organisation of his show was real, what does Pedler think they could do to clean up the situation - and would the public be prepared to pay for it?

Originally broadcast 25 March, 1971.
