This wildlife guzzler has been in place for 13 years, installed by students at Preston Middle School in Fort Collins, Colorado. The goal was to provide a source of water for bears near where they forage, especially during the hyperphagia period when they are consuming up to 20,000 calories per day and need a lot of water to digest that forage.

Mike Pintal filled the guzzler on a recent hike and since then many animals have taken advantage of the water when it wasn't frozen this winter.

This is one of the camera sites to monitor the impact of the Alexander Mountain Fire from late July through August 17, 2024. Cameras will remain in place for five years to document the recovery period. So far, we are seeing more mule deer and red and grey fox activity since the fire. We are looking forward to seeing which areas green up this spring and provide more wildlife habitat as a result of the fire.

We all wish the fire hadn't occured in the first place but we're taking advantage of the opportunity to learn something that may help wildlife in the future.
