Joana Mallwitz was the first woman to take on the role as Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin. Her extraordinary talent was spotted at an early age – in an area dominated by men. What’s Joana Mallwitz’s secret? The documentary “Momentum“ allows an intimate insight into her life – in moments of success and crises, on stage as well as in her everyday life. We met up with Joana Mallwitz, accompanied her at work and spoke to her about her career, how she works, the documentary and her new album with works by the composer Kurt Weill.

Joana Mallwitz was born in Hildesheim, Germany, in 1986. From the age of 13, she knew that she wanted to become a conductor. Which is exactly what she did - at 20, she already began to lead the orchestra at the Heidelberg Theatre. At 27, she was named General Music Director in Erfurt, making her the youngest Deneral Music Director in Europe. In 2019, she was voted as “Conductor of the Year” in the magazine “Opernwelt”. In 2023, she became Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin. She is currently focusing on crafting new concert formats—including "Expedition Concerts" as well as "Night Sessions,” where musicians from other genres are invited to perform - including DJs. “Changing Concerts” (German: Wandelkonzerte) take place at different locations in the Konzerthaus, while the audience is seated in the middle of the orchestra in "Right In the Middle Concerts” (German: Mittendrin-Konzerte).
