Latinist, translator, and publisher Ryan Grant joins Matt Gaspers to discuss Pope Leo’s first major interview (given to Crux senior correspondent Elise Ann Allen), excerpts of which have recently been published.

When asked about “the role of women in the Church and the Church’s approach to the LBGTQ+ community,” Pope Leo said, “I at the moment don’t have an intention of changing the teaching of the Church on the topic,” referring to the ordination of women, and further, “I find it highly unlikely … that the Church’s doctrine in terms of what the Church teaches about sexuality, what the Church teaches about marriage, [will change].”

Note, however, the disturbing implication of his words — he apparently thinks he has the power to change that which is immutable. By divine institution, women are not valid matter for the Sacrament of Holy Orders, and yet instead of reiterating this simple truth of the Faith, Pope Leo says he has no intention of changing this truth “at the moment” (as if it could ever change). Similarly, he finds it “highly unlikely” that the Church will ever reverse her perennial and absolute prohibition against unnatural vice, whereas the truth is that she most certainly will never do so (the notion that it is merely “unlikely” is absurd).

Pope Leo’s comments regarding the Traditional Latin Mass are likewise concerning. He seems to think that reverent Novus Ordo Masses are the answer to the problem: “… if we celebrate the Vatican II liturgy in a proper way, do you really find that much difference between this experience and that experience?”
