Music: Boris Goodunov/Борис Гудунов - Пропаганда На Здровье (Russian Federation national anthem).

The TyRex BB gun is not an exact PP-91 Kedr replica (Russian: ПП-91 «Кедр», where ПП stands for пистолет-пулемёт [pistolet-pulemiot] "submachine gun"), but still, it has a lot of parts in common with it, was made alongside the real thing in the same factory, and, most importantly, it can shoot full auto.

Although it was publicly showcased as early as mid-2006 (Wikipedia/Википедия), the prototype didn't appear "in the flesh" until February 2007 on a Russian airgun forum: it was, to say the least, rather rough around the edges (in true Russian fashion) - the BB SMG was clearly a rather ungainly adaptation of the already unattractive PP-91 Kedr machine pistol. The name Kedr (Кедр) itself is actually an acronym: Конструкция Евгения Драгунова (Konstruktsiya Evgeniya Dragunova), i.e. “Design by Evgeny Dragunov”.

It was, to put it mildly, a rather ugly prototype, but the future series-production TyRex (ТиРэкс) was already there on the whole, and the reuse of original parts from the PP-91 machine pistol, commonly used at the time by members of the Russian Ministry of the Interior (MVD/МВД), but also favored by Russian mobsters, soon raised the enthusiasm of local airgunners.

In addition to the fact that the entire interior of the gun (including the trigger mechanism) had to be gutted out, the firing lever was moved to the left side of the receiver, making it appear to be mounted upside down (which it actually is!). The original pistol grip, which was totally unsuited to the insertion of CO2 capsules, was replaced by a straight, more massive grip (a downright monstrous one, hence, perhaps, the name TyRex given to that BB gun?).

Apart from the markings, everything else would appear at first glance to be in keeping with the original SMG, and with good reason, since many parts of the PP-91 were integrated into this replica: the receiver, the stock, the front sight, the pressed sheet metal receiver cover, the magazine (or at least its outer shell), the firing selector... The result is an absolutely non-compliant replica that nevertheless retains the appearance of the original firearm.

There are three TyRex variants:
PPA-K: no folding stock, semi- and full auto firing modes (marketed in Russia only) ;
PPA-K-01: stock, semi- and full-auto firing mode;
PPA-K-02: semi-auto only for countries (like Germany, for instance) that prohibit burst firing.

Although this is by no means the best-looking Russian BB gun, it is without a shadow of a doubt one of the rarest Russian toys on the West European market.

I am not sure the Russians will ever produce again such overbuilt BB guns: who would bother to put so much work into a mere toy gun nowadays? And, besides, the Russians are busy making much more lethal weapons at the moment...
