Steve Pannell is an Aussie winemaking legend - one of those guys who left a job with a big, corporate winery and set up his own eponymous label. He's been turning out great wines under his own name for over 10 years, but has really hit his straps in the past 3 or 4. I'm thrilled to introduce the Field Street Shiraz - this has McLaren Vale writ large - black in the glass, opaque. Powerful aromas of black pen ink and more than a hint of chocolate, but the dark bitter kind. Black fruit as well, with a licquorice overlay. This leads into sweet dark plums, kept bright by fine, nippy tannin and pure sweet acidity. Firm, toned and deep. Serious wine here, unencumbered by too much oak - perfectly pitched. Excellent, serious, fine wine – great value.
