Swarm of Sharks Attack Spawning Grouper

Once a year, thousands of grouper gather on a reef in French Polynesia to mate - attracting hundreds of sharks to this feeding bonanza. Scientists on the Global Reef Expedition were there studying the predatory behavior of reef sharks and watched as swarms of grey reef sharks attacked marbled grouper while they were spawning.

We brought a film crew along to capture the event for "Mysteries of the Coral Canyon," an award-winning documentary airing nationally on PBS this November. Watch sharks attack grouper (and each other) in this clip from the show.
