Drivers linked to PakTaxi are reported
to be operating without official credentials.
The Elite Taxi Barcelona Association has publicly denounced that drivers allegedly linked to the PakTaxi organization are providing taxi services without the official credentials required by the Metropolitan Taxi Institute (IMET). According to the association, it hired a private detective two months ago to investigate these practices and asserts that the evidence gathered points to possible irregular activity.Alberto Álvarez , spokesperson for Élite, recalled that two years ago, cases were detected in which aspiring taxi drivers used devices such as earpieces and hidden cameras to receive instructions during the certification exam. "Since then, the IMET has tightened controls, and we believe some have opted to drive without a license," he noted.Élite Taxi denounces a " worrying proliferation " of these cases and warns that it is preparing a formal complaint. "This situation is damaging the image of the taxi; the yellow and black color is a symbol of Barcelona that we must protect," Álvarez emphasizes.The spokesperson clarified that his complaint was not motivated by ethnic or cultural bias: "There are colleagues at Élite Taxi of Pakistani origin whom we have always supported. Our concern is with a specific organization, not a community . What PakTaxi is promoting is detrimental to the entire sector," he stated, while accusing the association of encouraging the transfer of taxi drivers to VTC platforms.These statements come in the midst of the campaign for the elections to the Technical Taxi Board, which will be held on June 26th and in which PakTaxi will also be competing . "We have a lot at stake. If that association enters the representative bodies, there will be a voice that doesn't share our vision of taxi regulation and defense; it would be like bringing the wolf into the negotiating table," warns Álvarez.With the aim of strengthening entry requirements for the profession, Élite Taxi has been working for months on an agreement that would establish a B2 level of Catalan as mandatory for obtaining a taxi driver's credential. "If PakTaxi is represented, we will require this requirement to be met. If not, we will propose a B1 level with an oral exam ," the spokesperson stated.
