When a viewer of this channel asked a provocative question regarding the diamond district scene in John Schlesinger’s Marathon Man, I decided it would be useful to answer the query in the form of a short video. There is an indelible scene in this film, on 47th Street, where we see what happens when a concentration camp survivor recognizes the notorious Nazi war criminal, Christian Szell. The question the viewer asked was why no one seems to treat the survivor’s claim—to have spotted Szell—with any seriousness. This video examines some of the reasons that Schlesinger’s film unfolds in this way, with no one really doing much to help the survivor…to the point that she is forced to personally intervene, to try to stop Szell from getting away.
