🦷Routine dental care can be done at any time during pregnancy.

🦷Dental conditions that require immediate treatment, such as extractions, root canals, and restoration (amalgam or composite) of untreated caries, may be managed at any time during pregnancy.

🦷If necessary, dental X-rays can be done with shielding of the abdomen and thyroid.

🦷Local anesthesia can be administered (lidocaine, bupivacaine, mepivacaine
with or without epinephrine).

🦷The use of chlorhexidine and fluoridated mouth rinses, and xylitol-containing chewing gum to decrease oral bacteria may be considered.

🦷Acceptable analgesics include the following (if opioids are used, prescribe the lowest dose for the shortest duration):
➡️Acetaminophen
➡️Acetaminophen with Codeine, Hydrocodone, or Oxycodone
➡️Codeine
➡️Meperidine
➡️Morphine

🦷Acceptable antibiotics include:
➡️Amoxicillin
➡️Cephalosporins
➡️Clindamycin
➡️Metronidazole
➡️Penicillin

🦷Avoid prolonged time in the supine position during the second and third trimesters.
➡️To prevent supine hypotensive syndrome in the dental chair, elevate the right hip on the pregnant patient by 10-12 cm or place the patient in a 5% to 15% tilt to the left side.

🦷The following ARE NOT recommended:
➡️Valium
➡️IV anesthesia
➡️General or inhalation type anesthesia
➡️”Cycline” antibiotics
➡️Aspirin, ibuprofen, or other NSAID products
