Travel By High-Speed Train from Vientiane Capital to Luang Prabang I LAOS I Oct 24, 2023 - Temperature 84'F/29'C #travelbytrain #WanderingLeisure #laos

👉 In this video, we traveled from Vientiane Capital to Luang Prabang by high speed train. This is our first time traveling by train in Laos. The Lao-China Railway running between the Capital of Vientiane & the northern town of Boten on the border with Yunnan, China. The train line was officially opened on Dec 03, 2021.

👉 What is the train schedule from Vientiane Capital to Luang Prabang and vice versa?
Departure Schedule (Vientiane Cap to Luang Prabang)
07.30am
11:00am
03.30pm

Return Schedule (Luang Prabang to Vientiane Cap):
11.40am
04.51pm
07.00pm

👉 What is the duration of travel by train?
On our departure route from Vientiane Capital to Luang Prabang we took the second train of the day. The train departed Vientiane Cap on time at 11.00am and arrived Luang Prabang on time at 01.00pm which took 02 hours in total. We noticed that the train ran at 156kmph almost the entire time.

👉 How did we book our train tickets?
We booked our ticket by using a reliable freelance agent who was recommended by our Lao good friend. The communication was through WhatsApp very responsive and accurate. We transferred the ticket payment 02 weeks before our travel date. The agent sent a photo of our actual tickets 03 days before the trip . We collected the tickets from her at the Vientiane Train Station 10.30am (our train departed at 11am) it was super easy and quick.

👉 How much did we pay for the train tickets?
We paid USD 80 equal to LAK 1,590,000 (LAK is Lao Kip currency) please keep in mind it may be more or less depending on the fluctuating exchange rate of the day. We purchased a total for 04 tickets, 02 from VTE - LPB and 02 for our return tickets from LPB - VTE

VTE - LPB - FIRST CLASS ticket
Ticket Price: USD 22/ticket
Agent Fee: USD 2/ticket

LPB - VTE - SECOND CLASS ticket
Ticket Price: USD 14/ticket
Agent Fee: USD 2/ticket

***** Other options to buy tickets - you can buy tickets directly from the Lao-China Railway ticket counter at the train station and their office inside the Vientiane Center Mall (in Vientiane Cap). Why save a few bucks just to wait in a long queue & the worst is that by the time it is your turn the tickets are sold out. We heard about buying from the ticket app but we still could not find a reliable source to confirm this. If you decide to reserve your ticket via online agencies, make sure that they are recommended by reliable sources.

👉 Both Vientiane &Luang Prabang Railway stations are located out of town it takes about 30mn to/from city centers.

👉 What was our thought on this trip experience by Lao-China Railway?
We think travel by train from Vientiane to Luang Prabang is the best option. It is very affordable & only 2 hours for travel time it makes better sense than you would travel by bus/rental private van where it can take up to 7-10 hours depends on the road condition and weather. We think the train beats the flight option because of price and somewhat the safety reason. During the high season (November - April) you expect to pay around USD 120 - USD 150 for a return flight tickets per one person from Vientiane Cap to Luang Prabang (duration of flight is 30 minutes).

Overall we think that the train is smooth, modern and fast speed from 150-160 Kmph. The stations in both Vientiane cap and Luang Prabang are spacy even bigger than Lao airport (Wattay International airport). There are cafes and shops inside the stations. Clean and well operation facilities. You need to provide your passport to buy tickets and enter train stations (If you are a Lao citizen you can just use Lao ID). Please prepare for the security checks somewhat similar to security checks at the airport but we don't think it is as bas as they do not ask you to separate your digital devices while backpacks/carry-on/luggage are scanned. The staffs of train facilities can communicate in English, courteous and very helpful.
