The historic center of the city rises at the southern end of the lagoon, on a group of small islands divided by canals and connected to each other by bridges. Unlike Venice, most of the area is passable by cars and public transport. With the nearby Sottomarina, located in the stretch of land that divides the lagoon from the sea, and with the localities of Borgo San Giovanni and Brondolo, it forms a single urban center thanks to the creation of the Union Island and its namesake bridge that cuts across the Lusenzo lagoon.

The rest of the municipality is located in the hinterland and includes the mouths of the Brenta-Bacchiglione and Adige, with numerous other minor rivers and canals to the south and the internal lagoon coast up to the Valle di Millecampi to the north-west of Chioggia. Also relevant is the presence of the Bosco Nordio nature reserve between the two hamlets of Sant'Anna and Cavanella d'Adige, which provides a rare example of what was once the maquis of the upper Adriatic coast which in ancient times characterized a large part of the territory of the entire Gulf of Venice.[7]

It is 52 km from Venice, 51 km from Rovigo, 42 km from Padua, 130 km from Verona, 85 km from Vicenza, 70 km from Treviso and 140 km from Belluno. As far as seismic risk is concerned, Chioggia is classified in zone 4, i.e. very low risk
