Allosteric enzymes
Meaning of Allosteric enzymes:
The term allosteric is derived from the Greek word, allo which means, other and stereos means space or site.

Like all enzymes, allosteric enzymes have active site for binding of the substrate but they also have one or more regulatory (or allosteric) sites for binding regulatory metabolites which is called modulator
Modulators that inhibit enzyme activity are termed negative modulators. Whereas those that increase enzyme activity are called positive modulators.

Allosteric modulators bind with the allosteric site by reversible non-covalent interactions
This binding alters conformation of the enzyme protein, which in turn leads to alteration of the enzyme activity. Thus, occupancy of the allosteric site influences, the enzyme activity, thereby providing important means of its regulation. The process is relatively rapid, and hence, the first response of cells to any change(s) in intracellular metabolic state.
