Thousands of students protesting against government austerity measures clashed with police in cities throughout Italy on Friday.

In Bologna and Rome they marched in the streets of the city centre holding banners. Refering to their uncertain future, they chanted: "you'll pay for it, for job insecurity, for misery and grief."

One unidentified protester told euronews: "Today we launched a real symbolic ultimatum to the government to listen to what we're asking for: the problems of education have not been addressed. School buildings need billions and billions of euro to be secure," he said.

Another student said: "Now they are trying to cut what we have. There's not much left to cut and the austerity budget is the last joke of this government."

The Italian Parliament is considering a stability law, which includes significant cuts in public services.

Students are demanding more investment for public schools and universities.

They also presented the minister of education with a list of questions asking the government to "change course" over high tuition fees, building security and technology.
