On December 16, 1971, the Pakistani forces in East Pakistan, led by General A. A. K. Niazi, surrendered to the joint Indian and Bangladeshi forces at the Racecourse Ground in Dhaka (now known as Suhrawardy Udyan). This surrender marked the end of the brutal war and the creation of Bangladesh as an independent state.

The day is often remembered for the Bangladesh Liberation War and the sacrifices made by millions of Bangladeshis, including the lives of freedom fighters, civilians, and the military.
