The Ultimate 1964 Corvair Monza Spyder vs. Yenko Stinger

Описание к видео The Ultimate 1964 Corvair Monza Spyder vs. Yenko Stinger

Watch as the fastest 1964 Corvair Spyder takes on the Yenko Stinger in an epic showdown. Who will come out on top? Tune in to find out!

The Deadly 1964 Corvair Spyder and the Yenko Stinger were both high-performance variants of the Chevrolet Corvair, but they were produced in different years and had distinct characteristics. The 1964 Corvair Monza Spyder was the last year of the first-generation Corvair. It featured a turbocharged 164 cubic inch (2.7-liter) flat-six engine producing 150 horsepower, with peak power coming at 4000 rpm

This model benefited from improved low-speed torque and reduced turbo lag compared to earlier versions. The Yenko Stinger, based on the second-generation Corvair, was introduced in 1966. Don Yenko modified these cars for racing, offering several performance stages:

Stage 1: 160 hp
Stage 2: 190 hp
Stage 3: 220 hp
Stage 4: 240 hp (race version)

The most powerful Yenko Stinger (Stage 4) had a significant horsepower advantage over the 1964 Corvair Spyder. It produced 240 hp compared to the Spyder's 150 hp

The Yenko Stinger also benefited from extensive modifications, including suspension upgrades, weight reduction, and a limited-slip differential2

In terms of performance, the Yenko Stinger would likely outperform the 1964 Corvair Spyder due to its higher power output, improved suspension, and purpose-built racing modifications. However, it's important to note that these cars were not direct contemporaries and were built for different purposes - the Spyder as a performance-oriented road car, and the Yenko Stinger specifically for racing.

Performance Comparison
1964 Corvair Spyder

Engine: 164 cubic inch (2.7L) turbocharged flat-six
Power output: 150 hp at 4000 rpm
0-60 mph time: Approximately 10.2 seconds (based on the 1965 Corvair Corsa turbocharged model)1

1967 Yenko Stinger

0-60 mph time: "The best is about 6.0 seconds" (according to the 1967 Yenko Tech manual)1

Key Differences

Power Output: The Yenko Stinger, especially in its higher stages, significantly outperformed the 1964 Corvair Spyder in terms of horsepower.
Acceleration: The Yenko Stinger's claimed 0-60 mph time of about 6.0 seconds is substantially quicker than the Spyder's performance.
Customization: Yenko offered customers the ability to purchase individual components from different stages, allowing for personalized performance builds5
.
Purpose: While the Corvair Spyder was a performance-oriented road car, the Yenko Stinger was specifically modified for racing, with more extensive upgrades to the engine, suspension, and other components.
Rarity: The Yenko Stinger was a limited production, aftermarket modification, making it rarer than the factory-produced Corvair Spyder.

It's important to note that the Yenko Stinger was developed after 1964 and benefited from advancements in Corvair design and aftermarket performance technology. This explains its superior performance compared to the earlier 1964 Corvair Spyder.
