LGBT Best Practice: 49. How To Be An LGBT Ally

Here are a few ideas on how to be an LGBT ally.

1. Make the effort to educate yourself about LGBT issues.

2. If someone is having an inappropriate conversation about someone, speak up. If you notice any form of discrimination, report it. If someone is asking inappropriate questions of a colleague, tell them.

3. Be tuned into the issues LGBT individuals face.

4. Educate yourself about body dysmorphia, substance abuse, mental health etc.

5. Know what to look out for and the steps to take to support a colleague.

6. Invite your transgender colleagues along to same sex events. That way they won’t have to feel uncomfortable asking if they can come along.

7. Celebrate with your LGBT colleagues on international and national LGBT+ holidays, such as Pride, LGBT+ History Month, Bi-Visibility Day, International Transgender Day of Visibility.

8. Make yourself visible as an LGBT ally. Wear a badge or lanyard, put it on your signature strip, attend LGBT Employee Network events, attend LGBT events in the community, talk to others about your support for the LGBT community.
