On Monday 18th January 1988 the Australian Television Network, under the ownership of Qintex and Christopher Skase, relaunched Seven National News as Seven Nightly News in all capital cities.

The catalyst for the change had been the 27th December 1987 network swap in Adelaide when SAS 10 became SAS 7 and ADS 7 became ADS 10. As part of extensive national media ownership changes the two local stations were acquired by new owners of rival networks. It was eventually agreed the stations would swap network alignment which was made easy as both shared the same transmitter mast on Mount Lofty.

At the launch of Seven Nightly News, the NBC News theme package 'The Mission' by John Williams was introduced to enhance the new news brand.

In Melbourne, Jennifer Keyte was lured to HSV 7 from ATV 10 and paired with Glenn Taylor. Taylor later left the network and Jennifer Keyte became the key presenter.

Presenters - Glenn Taylor, Jennifer Keyte, Peter Landy with sport and weather presenter Paul Higgins.

Andrew Heslop commenced his career at 5DN 972 in 1985.
