African Spoonbill Feeding In The Shallows Of Sunset Dam In The Kruger National Park

The African Spoonbill, with the scientific name of Platalea alba, is a very interesting wading and water bird species found throughout the African continent. If you want to see an African Spoonbill in the Kruger National Park though, there is one place. Sunset Dam near Lower Sabie! There always seems to be at least one African Spoonbill feeding in the shallow water around Sunset Dam, at any time of day and any time of year. They are residents, and who can blame them? There is so much food for them to prey on in Sunset Dam.

The African Spoonbill using it's strange spoon-like point of its bill to draw small fish, crustaceans and water insects into it's mouth. As mentioned, this video was taken at Sunset Dam, and shows the typical feeding habits of the African Spoonbill.
