Steam celebrates the first Steam Next Fest of the year 2025. Just like last time around I am going to try some of the upcoming games that provide a demo-version. I will try the game and give you my opinion afterwards.

Today I wanted to try a game called MetalMercs by Gaming Jay! It is an RTS game that fits right into the gaming corner that is Battletech/Mechwarrior. It is tagged as a 2 pixel real time strategy.
The game has a planned release sometime in 2025. According to the patrion page of the developer the game will be around 15€ in its final form.

Steam description:
Destroy. Salvage. Repair. Upgrade. PROFIT! A real-time tactical experience where you command your own mercenary outfit of mechs and mercs and adventure through randomly generated missions filled with rewards, glory, and bitter defeat.

My opinion:
If you ever wished there was a quicker rts-like Mechcommande or Battletech with mercenary elements this is the game for you. It scratches an itch that I had for the longest time. After playing through MechCommander the 100th time this finally gives me a new game to get my mech fix in.
Again I want to point out that this game is not part of the Battletech universe or in any way affiliated with it. It has its own univerese with factions and backstories. The mechs, weapons and factions are different and unique, but underneath it all you can clearly see the influence of Battletech which in my opinion is not a negative. The gameplay is fast and what seems easy at first can rapidly lead to death by overconfidence. Especially if you get into the higher contracts the fights get messier and way more deadly.
Overall if you liked what the game promises you and the simple gameplay loop is enough for you than this game is for you otherwise keep your hand of it. I personally think the game really hits home for me. The presentation in the pixel retro style with the retro-esque futuristic electromusic just clicks the right way. I will buy this game and play it, probably way to much. I am interested to see what the game can be in its final state and if there will be more details and game systems added.
